Everything you need to know to make the right choice for your home’s domestic and in-floor radiant hydronic heating.

If you are looking into heating systems, you might feel a bit overwhelmed by the technical terms and options available. Boilers have been a central part of home heating for over a century, originating in the 19th century as coal-powered units to heat water for steam systems, before evolving into modern gas and electric models.

Today, the big debate for homeowners is often between traditional boilers and the increasingly popular combi (combination) boilers. Combi boilers offer a versatile solution by combining central heating and hot water on demand. Traditional Boilers vs. Combi Boilers.

Understanding the core differences between these systems can help you decide which is best suited for your property’s demands. Traditional Boilers and Combi Boilers Both have different Space Requirements compared to a separate hot water tank.

Feature Traditional Boilers Combi Boilers
Space Requirement Requires space for both the boiler unit and a separate hot water tank. Compact design that does not require a hot water tank.
Efficiency Offers high efficiency, but experiences some heat loss to the tank. Generally more efficient since they heat water on-demand.
Hot Water Supply Capable of supplying hot water to multiple taps simultaneously. Provides a limited flow when supplying multiple outlets at once.
Installation Cost Typically has a higher upfront cost due to the need for additional parts. Features a lower upfront installation cost.
Maintenance Less complex internally, but requires maintenance related to the tank. Simpler overall setup, but requires annual check-ups.
Best Fit For… Larger homes that have a high demand for hot water. Small to medium-sized homes with moderate hot water needs.

Sizing Your Boiler: How Much Heating Do You Need?

Proper boiler sizing is critical to ensure optimal heating without wasting energy, which is especially important in harsh winter climates like southern alberta. sizing depends on your home’s square footage, insulation, and the local climate.
Here is a quick breakdown based on British Thermal Units (BTUs) calculation:

150,000 BTU: Suitable for 2 bathrooms, providing a 6 GPM flow rate.

160,000 BTU: Suitable for 2.5 bathrooms, providing a 6.4 GPM flow rate.
180,000 BTU: Suitable for 3 bathrooms, providing a 7.2 GPM flow rate.
199,000 BTU: Suitable for 4 or more bathrooms, providing a 7.9 GPM flow rate.

Pro Tip: Always consult a heating professional for precise sizing recommendations tailored to your specific climate and home design.

The Greenstar series uses condensing technology to hit up to 95% AFUE and features advanced modulation to adjust heat output based on real-time demand. High-end models like the Greenstar 8000 even offer smart home compatibility for remote app control. They are noted for premium build quality and stainless steel heat exchangers].

Essential Maintenance Tips:
To keep your boiler running efficiently and safely, you should stay on top of regular maintenance.

Inspect Vents and Flues: Ensure that vents and flues are clear of obstructions, as these can severely impact combustion and safety.

Flush the System: Perform a system flush every few years to remove sediment that accumulates and negatively affects efficiency. Final Thoughts

Both traditional and combi boilers offer unique benefits for your home. A traditional boiler provides more stable hot water, making it a better choice for larger homes. Conversely, a combi boiler is compact and ideal for small to medium
homes.

When choosing a boiler, you should consider your home’s size, hot water demand, and budget. With proper sizing and regular maintenance, either type of boiler will provide efficient, reliable heat for many years.

I’ve had Mike come out for several years now maintaining and repairing electrical countless times in southwest Calgary. When it comes to residential electrical repair and troubleshooting, He always finds the issue and fixes it if it’s possible to do it on the first trip without drywall repair or exterior adjustments and knows a lot about home construction and building science to advise the customer when it comes to weighing their options.

Mike and Team were fantastic to work with. We have a large property with a complex boiler, hydronic heating system and electrical system. To make matters more complicated, we had another company complete work on it the prior summer and many things were unfortunately broken in the process. Mike and team came in and promptly and efficiently diagnosed and fixed multiple issues. Everything is now working perfectly! They were great to deal with - on time, under budget and great communicators throughout the process. Would absolutely recommend.

We had Mike replace our outdoor garage sconce lights partly because one of them had a short circuit and needed further looking into. He was able to repair the short and replace the old lights with a fixture that has motion detection and turns off automatically during the day and activates with motion automatically during the night. Mike responded right away to our request, service was excellent, and we are so happy with the new garage lights! Highly recommend this business A+
