Pot Lights Done Right: A Guide to Recessed Lighting
Pot lights (also called recessed, can or downlights) can transform a room, or make it feel like an airport hallway. Quality fixtures range from under $100 to well over $700, so it pays to know what you’re buying.

Where Pot Lights Work Best

- Great for: Kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms and hallways.
- Highlight features: Countertops, artwork, fireplaces and stone walls.
- Less ideal: Closets and garages, where simpler fixtures often do a better job.
- Outdoors: Use damp- or wet-rated fixtures for soffits, covered patios and bar tops.
Lumens, Not Watts
With LEDs, lumens measure brightness. Watts just measure power use.
- 800 to 1,000 lumens: Suits most rooms with standard ceilings.
- 1,200 to 2,000 lumens: For tall or vaulted ceilings.
- Adjustable output: Some fixtures let you set the lumen level at install.
Pro tip: Put pot lights on dimmers. It’s the easiest way to go from task lighting to movie night.
Key Features to Consider
- Low glare: Deeply set (regressed) lights create a “quiet ceiling” so you notice the room, not the fixtures.
- Beam spread: Narrow beams highlight; wide beams wash a room.
- Colour options: Warm-dim, tunable white or full colour. Warm-dim is a popular baseline.
- Tilt: Adjustable fixtures (often up to 30°) can aim at art or a fireplace.
- Repairability: Choose fixtures with replaceable drivers so a failed part doesn’t mean a new light.
Lighting Terms Made Simple
- CRI (Colour Rendering Index): How true colours look, on a 0 to 100 scale. Look for 90+.
- Colour temperature (K): 2700K to 3000K is warm and cozy; 4000K+ is cooler and crisper.
- Optics: The parts that shape and direct the light.
- Regress: How far the light source sits inside the fixture. Deeper means less glare.
- IC-rated: Safe to install in contact with insulation, important in Calgary ceilings.
Our advice: Not all downlights are built to the same standard. A little research on brand reliability goes a long way.
