ELECTRIC RADIANT IN-FLOOR HEATING

Warm Floors, Warm Toes: Why Electric Radiant Heat?

A lot of trends come and go. But if you asked us what the single greatest improvement to modern tile floors is, the answer is easily: Electric Radiant Heat.

There is a specific kind of luxury in a warm floor that you just never take for granted. Whether it’s a chilly Calgary morning or a snowy night in Canmore, that feeling of warmth under your feet changes the entire vibe of a room.

The best part? It’s incredibly efficient. Running an electric radiant floor can use as little energy as a single 100-watt lightbulb.

Pro Tip: Keep in mind that electric radiant heat is a comfort system. It’s designed to make your floors feel amazing, not to be the primary heat source for the whole room!

How Does It Work? (The “Electric Blanket” Effect)

There are several types of systems on the market, but they all share a common DNA. Think of it like an electric blanket for your floor: they use a matrix of wires to conduct and distribute heat evenly.

On many of our projects, we recommend the Ditra and NuHeat Mat system. It’s a favorite because:

  • The Tech: It’s a woven polyester fabric mat with heat wires already embedded.

  • The Install: The mat is laminated to the subfloor with a layer of thinset (a specialized mortar that handles moisture like a pro).

  • Durability: Once it’s in, it’s a rock-solid part of your floor.

Planning Your Layout: Heat Where You Stand

When we’re planning your system, we start by measuring the “walkable” area.

  • Standard Mats: For open, rectangular floor plans, an off-the-shelf mat is usually the most cost-effective choice.

  • Custom Fits: For complex room shapes, we can special-order a custom-fit system. These require a detailed drawing showing exactly where the electrical hookups and thermostat controls will live.

A safety warning from your electrician: Heat wires should never run under cabinets or toilets. If they do, they can overheat and eventually burn out. We only want the heat where your feet actually go!

The Remodel Secret: No Need to Rip Everything Out!

If you’re remodeling an older home, you might be surprised to learn that we don’t always have to tear everything down to the subfloor.

In the past, we would have spent days ripping out old flooring. Now, we can save you the mess and the extra cost by installing over a properly prepared existing vinyl floor.

Ready for a warmer winter?

If you’re tired of stepping onto cold tiles every morning, let’s chat about getting a radiant system into your next project. It’s one of those upgrades you’ll appreciate every single day.

We at YYC ELECTRICIAN love the winter scene here in this beautiful city. Admittedly Calgary weather can be tough when the pot lights aren’t working, the dimmer switches aren’t dimming and you need emergency electrical services that can tackle an electric hot water heater, infloor radiant heating and everything else that keeps your day to day operating smoothly. We can get your heating systems back up and running as well as the pot lights regardless of whether it’s during standard operating hours or you’re searching online for an emergency electrician near me kind of thing. We service electric radiant heat, hydronic heating controls and furnace heating systems. If there are cables and wires than we can tackle it.
