Steam Humidifiers

- Best for: Larger homes, very dry climates like Calgary, and homes with hardwood or fine wood furniture.
- How it works: Boils water electrically and injects pure steam into your ductwork.
- Key advantage: The most precise humidity control, and it works even when the furnace isn’t calling for heat.
Top model: The AprilAire 800 uses electrode technology and a yearly replaceable steam canister. It’s ideal for homes up to about 6,200 sq. ft.
Fan-Powered Humidifiers
- Best for: Larger homes wanting strong output without the cost of steam.
- How it works: A built-in fan pushes air across a water-soaked pad and into the ducts.
- Key advantage: More output than bypass models, and no bypass duct needed, great where space is tight.
Top model: The Honeywell HE360 is a reliable favourite for homes up to about 4,500 sq. ft.
Bypass Humidifiers
- Best for: Medium-sized homes wanting a budget-friendly, efficient option.
- How it works: Uses the furnace blower to route warm air through a water panel and back into the return duct.
- Key advantage: No fan motor, so it’s quiet, simple and very economical.
Top models: The AprilAire 500 (homes up to about 3,000 sq. ft.) and the Honeywell HE280 are both proven, low-maintenance choices.
Choosing & Running Your Humidifier
- Size it right: Capacity is in gallons per day. Too small runs constantly; too big causes window condensation.
- Match your HVAC: Check furnace type, duct layout and controls.
- Look for features: Automatic humidity control with an outdoor sensor, low-water shutoff and easy pad replacement.
Finding the sweet spot
- Aim for 30% to 50% relative humidity in milder weather.
- When it drops to -20°C or colder, lower it to about 20% to 25% to prevent frost on windows.
- If you see frost or moisture inside your windows, turn it down and run bath and kitchen fans.
- Replace the pad or steam canister at least once a year.
Pro tip: Humid air feels warmer than dry air. Many people find they can lower the thermostat a degree or two and feel just as cozy, saving on heating bills.
